Dimarzio Pickups

Note on F-Spacing: The majority of guitars will use F-Spacing pickups - certainly most Ibanez guitars. Exceptions are Gibsons with ABR bridges, some MusicMan guitars and guitars fitted with Kahler Tremolos. F-spacing refers to a wider* spacing between pole pieces for improved alignment with the strings on most guitars with tremolos and many newer fixed-bridge instruments. All DiMarzio full-sized humbuckers are available in standard* spacing or F-spacing at the same price. F-spaced humbuckers should be used in the neck or bridge position when the distance between the high and low E strings measures 51 mm or greater over the pickup. * Standard is 48mm. Please specify “F” or Standard” at the time you place your order. The X2N^®  & D’Activator-X come in one spacing for all guitars.

DiMarzio DP-153 FRED - We designed FRED® to bump the mid-range of the PAF Pro® EQ up a notch, but in the process, something unusual happened. Harmonics that humbuckers usually don't reproduce started popping out, particularly with overdriven amps and distortion units. FRED® has about the same power as the PAF Pro®, but the unusual overtones create a sound with more crank and growl. Joe Satriani was the first player to discover and exploit these qualities, and it's been his main bridge pickup ever since. FRED® is really sensitive to changes in pick attack and control settings, and its distinctive tone makes a great recorded sound for both penetrating solos and tight rhythm tracks.

Recommended For: Neck and bridge positions in all solidbody, hollow and semi-hollowbody guitars.

DiMarzio DP213 PAF Joe Pickup - Joe described this tone as being "tubular". Through the use of Virtual Vintage® technology, clear-sounding low frequencies are blended with warm-sounding mids and high frequencies, which makes the PAF Joe™ equally good for chords and single notes. It was first used by Joe throughout the 2003 G3 tour.

DiMarzio DP-158 Evolution for neck - The Evolution® neck and bridge humbuckers are the result of two years of research to come up with the right sound for a very demanding player: Steve Vai and his Ibanez® Jems. Both pickups are designed for maximum impact and power. The neck pickup is fat, punchy and loud. The bridge pickup is tight, aggressive and louder. Both pickups have our patented dual-resonance configuration to reproduce more harmonic overtones than conventional humbuckers.  Evolution® pickups are not polite-sounding, and they're not for the inexperienced, but-if you've got the chops and a hot amp-your sound will burn. The Evolution® pickups were originally designed with live gigs in mind, but they have so much presence and definition that they're great recording pickups, too; they slice right through even the densest mix.

DiMarzio DP-159 Evolution for bridge - This pickup is designed for maximum impact and power. The sound is tight, aggressive and loud. The design incorporates our patented dual-resonance coil configuration that senses more harmonic overtones than ordinary humbuckers.

Recommended For: Bridge position in solid body guitars.
Tech Talk: The Evolution® bridge pickup works best for soloing where the sound must cut through. Low notes are very tight, and the highs have a lot of presence, enabling the pickup to be heard in almost any situation. Obviously, the Evolution® was designed for Steve's Ibanez® Jems, but it can add a lot of punch and definition to Les Pauls and similar set-neck guitars - even the lowest bass notes really jump out of the amp, and feedback occurs easily with a wide range of harmonic overtones.

DiMarzio DP-155 Tone Zone for bridge - Because the lows, mids, and highs are all boosted, using a Tone Zone feels like cranking up an extra set of tone controls. It adds further dimension to the sound of your amp - that elusive edge that can make a good-sounding rig into a great-sounding one. Notes seem to get bigger after they're picked, and burn hard as they sustain.

The Tone Zone has the right stuff to wake up your amp. Its ballsy, aggressive tone has plenty of drive in all the right frequencies, abundant gain to push preamps and power amps, and sensitivity to pick attack that gets the most out of any style from Metal to Blues.

DiMarzio DP-100 Super Distortion for bridge - But don't confuse classic with outdated. Diverse artists from Al DiMeola, Frank Gambale and Vinnie Moore to Metal veterans Iron Maiden and Ace Frehley have chosen the Super Distortion^® as an integral part of their personal sound. With plenty of output and mid-boost to boot your amp into overdrive, Super Distortion^® humbuckers put out a hot, thick tone with a tight bottom-end: a classic tone when plugged directly into the front-end of any high-gain tube amplifier. Used in the bridge position of a locking-trem equipped guitar, the Super Distortion^® puts back low-end the tremolo can bleed off.

Recommended For:  The Super is primarily a bridge position pickup, although it can be used in the neck position with a relatively low-gain amp. Specifically designed for solid-bodies: hollow and semi-hollow guitars can be hard to control with warm, high output pickups.

Tech Talk: When Dimarzio first built the the Dimarzio DP-1000 Super Distortion, it was a one-conductor pickup. As a 4-conductor pickup, it's extremely versatile. Coil-splitting produces a very Strat^®-like option, both in tone and power. Parallel wiring is similar to splitting, but it's still humbucking and a little more hollow-sounding; Paul Gilbert used to use 2 Supers wired in parallel when he was in Racer X.

The PAF Pro®  was created when chops-intensive playing was first starting to happen, and high-gain amps and rack systems were getting popular. A pickup was needed that combined a lot of presence and "cut" with an open-sounding  PAF® vibe. The transparency of its sound lets the PAF Pro® slice through heavy processing, where darker-sounding pickups get lost in the mud of the effects chain. Low notes have both snap and chunk, and there is a spike in the mid-range that gives the pickup a subtle "aw" vowel sound, like a wah-wah pedal stopped in the middle. Treble response is tweaked, so high notes stand out without getting brittle. The PAF Pro® makes an outstanding neck pickup in almost any guitar, and it's an exceptional bridge pickup when high output isn't required.

Recommended For: The PAF Pro® is a dependable choice right across the board - neck and bridge positions, solid-body, semi-hollow and hollow body guitars are equally effective uses.
